Good Time to Decide on Farm Investments

Why Durapak Slatted Rubber is the Smart Investment for Livestock Performance and Farm Profitability
As autumn approaches and the time to house livestock draws near, it's crucial for farmers to finalise their decisions on farm investments, particularly regarding the installation of slatted rubber. With the right choice, the benefits can be substantial, not only for the welfare of the animals but also for the farm's profitability. In this article, we’ll explore why investing in high-quality slatted rubber, such as Durapak Slatted Rubber, can be a wise decision for Irish farmers.

Why Farmers Should Prioritise Quality

When making investment decisions, it's vital for farmers to conduct thorough research and prioritise quality over price. While cost is a key consideration, the lowest-priced products often fail to deliver the best returns in terms of animal performance and overall farm profitability. Therefore, it’s essential to base decisions on factors like return on capital employed, durability, animal welfare benefits, and the quality of service provided by suppliers.

The Evolution of Slatted Rubber: From Trials to Triumphs

Historically, the benefits of slatted rubber were questioned, with early scientific trials showing no significant advantages. However, the narrative began to change following a comprehensive trial conducted by Teagasc at the Grange Research Station in Co. Meath during 2006-2007. This study involved 360 beef bullocks and compared three different types of slatted rubber against out-wintering pads and bare concrete slats.

One of the standout performers in this trial was Durapak Slatted Rubber, which showed a marked improvement in animal performance. Bullocks housed on Durapak Mats achieved an additional 14 kg in carcass weight compared to those on bare concrete slats. This increase translated to an extra €40-45 per head, proving the financial viability of investing in quality slatted rubber.

Recent Trials Highlight the Benefits of Durapak Slatted Rubber

In late 2020, Dr. Bernadette Earley and her team at Grange Research conducted a significant study comparing the performance of livestock housed on concrete slatted floors (CSF) versus those on Durapak Slatted Rubber Mats. This study, involving 140 Charolais and Limousin crossbred beef steers, sought to determine the impact of flooring type on various performance metrics.

The animals first underwent a 21-day adaptation period to acclimate them to a finishing diet consisting of grass silage and a rolled barley-based total mixed ration, offered on a 60:40 dry matter basis. Following this, the steers were randomly assigned by age and weight to one of two treatments: housing on a bare concrete slatted floor (CSF) or on a CSF covered with Durapak Slatted Rubber Mats. The animals were grouped into pens, with four steers per pen and a space allowance of three square metres per head.

Throughout the 120-day finishing phase, the steers were closely monitored. Feed intake was carefully controlled, with feed being weighed into each pen twice daily, and any leftovers removed and weighed weekly. The animals were weighed every 14 days initially, with the frequency increasing to weekly weighings towards the end of the study. Additionally, their behaviour was observed via CCTV, while hoof condition, blood profiles, and hide dirt scores were recorded at regular intervals.

The performance data from this trial were first presented at the Teagasc National Conference in November 2020 and later detailed in Teagasc’s Beef ‘24 publication in June 2024. The findings revealed no significant difference in feed intake between the two groups, although animals on the Durapak Rubber Mats showed a slightly higher dry matter intake of 0.2 kg.

The study’s most notable finding was the significant difference in average daily gain (ADG). Steers housed on Durapak Rubber Mats gained an average of 1.15 kg per day, compared to 0.98 kg per day for those on concrete slatted floors. This improvement in growth rate also led to a more efficient feed conversion rate and better slaughter performance, making Durapak Slatted Rubber an attractive option for farmers seeking to optimise their livestock's productivity.

Enhanced Animal Welfare

Beyond the measurable performance benefits, Durapak Slatted Rubber also enhances animal welfare. The mats are designed to be more comfortable underfoot, reducing stress and the risk of injuries, such as hoof damage. Dr. Earley's research noted that steers housed on rubber-covered slats lay down for longer periods and exhibited more frequent getting up and lying down movements. This improved welfare translates to better overall health and productivity, which is ultimately reflected in the bottom line.

Durability and Longevity

Durapak mats are engineered for durability, with a robust construction that can withstand the demands of a busy livestock environment. This longevity means that farmers can expect a long-term return on their investment, reducing the need for frequent replacements and minimising ongoing maintenance costs.

Practical Considerations for Farmers

When considering the installation of slatted rubber mats, farmers should evaluate several practical factors:

  1. Installation and Maintenance
Durapak Slatted Rubber is designed for easy installation, fitting securely over existing slatted floors. The mats require minimal maintenance, making them a hassle-free addition to the farm. Regular cleaning is essential to maintain hygiene and performance, but the mats are built to endure the rigours of everyday use.
  2. Cost-Benefit Analysis
While the initial outlay for Durapak mats may be higher than lower-quality alternatives, the long-term benefits in terms of animal performance, welfare, and product longevity make it a sound investment. Farmers should consider the potential for increased carcass weights and improved feed conversion rates when calculating the return on investment.
